Tips for Productive Parent-Teacher Conferences

If a student often acts bored, for example, a teacher may assume he isn’t interested in learning.

Here are some behaviors children can learn that will lead to success:

1. Sit close to the front or near the center of the class (if the teacher has not already assigned seats).

2. Be interested in what the teacher is saying. Sit up straight and look the teacher in the eye.

3. Be on time for class—or early. Bring pencils, paper, and any other needed supplies with you.

4. Raise your hand and volunteer answers frequently.

5. Ask questions when you don’t understand.

6. Take notes. Be organized. Write down all directions and assignments.

7. Be especially quiet and well-behaved when visitors are in the room.

8. Offer to help the teacher when he or she needs help.

9. Don’t argue with the teacher in front of others. If there is something you don’t think is fair, talk to the teacher in private.

10. When the teacher has gone out of the way to help you, be sure to say thanks.

Although these 10 tips may not solve all the problems children face in school, they can help lead to school success.
